This stroke research program includes translational research on molecular genetic level, stroke risk factors, acute treatment and acute diagnostic evaluation of stroke, epidemiology of stroke, nursing and life after stroke.

Our multidisciplinary team work with neurologist, nurse specialist, physiotherapist, biostatistician, GP, clinical geneticist, molecular geneticist and methodological expertise is based on the first-ever stroke patients included in the Lund Stroke Register. More than 3200 stroke patients have been included. The type of stroke is characterised and risk factors including genetic causes are examined. We also assess from an epidemiological point of view if stroke incidence and characteristics (including survival) are changing over time. Follow-up of the patients regarding pain (including shoulder pain), nutritional status, quality of life and secondary stroke prevention is performed. Possibilities to treat stroke patients in primary care units are studied. Causes of intracerebral haemorrhage are examined as well as survival after intracerebral haemorrhage. Recovery after stroke is also studied. We are co-operating internationally in the International Stroke Genetics Consortium.
